Beautiful Scenery- Photography

I was assigned to take photos of my local area by my teacher so I could have a greater understanding of locations and possible scenes for our film.

These two albums where both taken in my hometown as I walking through on an evening stroll. I took these shots on my Nikon Coolpix L830 SLR and was able to capture the clock in detail as well as the plants in the foreground. I love the depth of field this camera brings to my phots. i have taken note of where these possible filming locations are.

These two shots where also taken on a walk through my village on an afternoon walk. There is a lot of fields in my area so I was able to walk onto the land and take some shots of the landscape before it was harvested.

again the focus and depth of field are impressiv eon this camera. however I will need to be careful because Nikon ar enot renound for thier video quality as they are their picture quality. I will discuss with the team what action will be need to be taken.

This shot was taken when on a shoot for 'Tom's Day Out' a short film that I worked on a year ago. I was playing around with the parallels of the track and how it contrasted the smooth countryside around us.

This shot was also taken on Tom's Days Out while taking a break from shooting. I noticed a couple where getting married across the road and I also spotted a circular statue nearby, thus creating this picture. I had to take the photo a couple of times to get the framing right but i was happy with my results.

Another shot from Tom's Day Out, this was what was behind me when I was taking the shot above. I took several shots in order to get the right one, but I am pleased how this shot turned out. I love the sunset that catches the ripples on the river and the way the boat is placed perfectly within frame. This got me considering framing of our work in our film and I began talking with Lucie about her visions for the film. We both agreed our visual would improve if we framed the subject correctly.

This was taken with my Nikon SLR camera while outside playing with friends. I noticed the moon was out and grabbed my camera to snap a shot. I took several and was able to zoom in to get a good quality photo.

This photo was captured while at a families wedding. My brother was standing in the middle of the shot and I decided to take a photo of him. I love the lighting in this one and it gave a romantic yet cinematic feel to the shot. I want to create a similar feeling with the lighting, creating suspence for what lurks in the darker as the boy is only used to the light.

This last photo was taken on my iPod while my parents stopped the car for something to eat. Although this is in Hastings and would be hard to travel to I like the layering of this shot and the stark contrast of the sky compared to the pebbles of the beach. This could portray the natural world and what the boy is missing out on.

Title Day After Tomorrow- Font Analysis

Title Day After Tomorrow- Font Analysis

This is a possible font idea for my film opening. It links into our short film opening theme of isolation and the mundane because it turns the mundane into an interesting narrative. the Title has bold edges and draws the audiences attention, linking to the idea that the world is shutting down . The Sci-Fi font will convey a sense of fear and will give distinct clarity from the text in the foreground.
The group and I plan to use the tutorial by Video Co-Pilot because we feel it incorporates our sense of isolation and give an enigma to our film. We also plan to incorporate the colour blue into the darkness of our opening sequence as this will give the audience an interest into the blackness while giving a strong depth of field.

Props/Locations for Opening Sequence

Props/Locations for Opening Sequence

In our opening sequence we want the WIFI to flicker and go off. we figured that we would do an ECU on either the light source or a blue rim and manually control the light bleeping on and off.

To experiment with light I thought we might be able to place these lights on the screen of the laptop. they will be hidden from shot and will further light up the face of the actor. it will give a electronic effect to the light and also show the facial features of the protagonist

The music that is being streamed to the iPod through YouTube will suddenly halt and an error screen will appear.

The laptop the son will be on will flicker off. we have decided that we will not show the screen as a bar effect will appear on the screen, so we will use lights that will give a blue effect. after analyzing the opening sequence of the Titanic I noticed the use of a cold blue gave a enigma effect to the story, so this will be used to hit the characters face.

The blue circle around the printers logo may flicker on and off. I am also thinking of recording some sound to include in the background as all of the electric appliances fail.

The phone is connected to the landline and will mysteriously cut off in the middle of a sentence. This will be added in through sound effects that will be recorded separately form the scene.

By using these simple appliances the audience will be able to relate to their use and the lack of communication without this technology.

Opening Sequence- Titanic Analysis

                                                                 Titanic Movie Opening Titles
Director: James Cameron
Cinematographer: Russell Carpenter
Date Realised: November 18th 1997
We open up with the company
Digitally mastered THX
which is a company that specialise in keeping quality sound for movie theatres, computer speakers, screening rooms and televisions. It is a spinoff company form Lucas film which informs the spectator that they are watching a high quality movie which is run by a well-known company.
We open up with the opening credits to see 20th century fox. We instantly recognise the theme tune played in the background and we understand who has helped promote the film. Picture fades and we hear the sound of a woman singing a group of soft sounding notes conveying her remorse and grief over the Titanic. This hints at what is to come and we as an audience realise this will be a solemn opening.
We fade into an establishing shot that is in a sepia tone. This allows the audience to feel in the moment of the scene and almost feel like they are on the dock in 1912 waving goodbye to the passengers and their loved ones. It also shows us the main ship, the Titanic, and a vast crowd of people waving goodbye on the ship as the camera pans onto it. The director uses dramatic irony in this shot because we know what eventually happens to the Titanic, thus enabling us to feel smarter as a spectator and gain respect for Nolan for acknowledging us as an audience. We also get to see the vastness of the ship as the camera pans onto it. The boat nearly takes up the whole screen compared to the dock. This shot was primarily used to create a sense of wonderment and power connected to the Titanic which in turn allows us, the audience, to be in awe of the ship. This will allow for a greater impact for when the Titanic eventually sinks.
We cross fade to a medium close up of people waving on the shore while a cameraman films the extras on the Titanic. The titles ‘Paramount pictures and Twentieth century fox present’
appear. This comes into the left third of the camera to enable the opening titles to be framed in the picture, to not to become unbalanced or to cover up anyone on the boat that is waving. By doing so the shot allows us to take in the full camera shot without losing any information given to us visually by the director and cinematographer such as the waving hands. The editor has also positioned the titles so that the Titanic, the cameraman in shot and the arms make a frame around it enabling it to be more identifiable. The camera slowly pans as well to add kinetic energy to the moving boat and to allow the spectator to realise that the boat is about to journey off to its doom and that the waving hands and happy faces are ironic because of what is to come.

We cross fade again to see another title exclaiming the words
A Light storm Entertainment Production
this is level with the extras on the higher balconies. We now begin to notice the sheer volume of people on the boat and how they all seemed to be of middle or upper class. This can convey the division of the time period and how still lower classes had to take the lower decks in order to keep out of the way of other passengers. The title font is not relevant to the times however it gives us the notion that we are looking back on previous events and that this is not in real time (such as the use of sepia tone to convey this is past footage). It hints at an epic journey but also does not take away any elements of the story nor take any suspense away. The use of companies also convey an epic drama such as Paramount studios being involved and we become engrossed in the film because we are enticed by the narrative and how these well-known companies will play out the well-known story.
A long shot is used to portray a group of children and two young girls waving goodbye in slow motion. The editor uses no titles to allow us to focus in the families affected and puts the footage in slow motion to allow the impact of what is about to happen to sink in. This is the shortest shot of them all at about about two seconds long, on the contrary this is the most poignant shot of the opening sequence because it conveys how no one was immune from the disaster and how it affected everybody on board no matter how young, old, man, woman, child or (the most important of all) class.
We cross fade to a cold shot of the water. It is in real time and Nolan visually informs us of this using a blue colour onto the water, which evokes emotions of cold and despair. This allows a stark contrast to the previous shots, where there was a happy feeling to the sequence. The camera is still in slow motion to allow the ice cold water to eerily float around in shot. The title fades in as the water continues to move, allowing more kinetic energy to continue even though the boat is not in shot. The words
‘Titanic’
are clear in view. Nolan allows holds this shot for twelve seconds in order for the non-diegetic sound of the singer and the main title to linger. We are now aware of the title of the film and we are forced to focus on this because there is no motion in the camera expect for the black sea and the light reflecting off it, giving the scene a eulogy like feel which allows us to remember the tragedy.
The next shot cross fades underwater and allows Morden day to overtake the past. This effect allows the audience to move into real time as well as give me insight in how to fade into the present time after our opening. The use of blue is a sign of coldness and could be interpreted as loss of hope or the reality of finding the Titanic after it sunk one hundred and two years ago. The submarine floats towards us in a long shot and fills up the shot with its cold light to represent the darkness that has been filled with despair and the coldness of the ocean at that depth. We hear the diegetic sound from the submarine as it sends out it sonar and bubbles can be heard as we glide over the top of the Submarine, allowing us to immerse ourselves in this CGI world.
We fade to another shot of the submarine which is heading closer to the camera and this time we see the lights of the submarine and the body of it. The camera moves into an Ariel/ extreme long shot of the two submarines, which we were unaware of at the beginning of the underwater sequence. We gently zoom out to allow the audience not only to take in what they have just witnessed butt also represent the two main protagonists as a symbol of hope as they float away into the darkness, being a symbol that there can be hope in the darkest of times. At the era of the titanic there was a lot of discrimination between classes that can be seen throughout the late 19th century and plays such as in 'An Inspector Calls’.

Opening Sequence Analysis- Titanic

Opening Sequence Analysis- Titanic

I am Analysing the film Titanic as my opening sequence. I have chosen this film because it includes the drama genre plus it rolls the credit sequence in under two minutes so it gives me a realistic idea of the time frame in order to get my story across. I also found the music used is palpable of the films message towards the spectator as well as the contrast from the past to the present day.

Tasksheet for Opening Sequence

Task sheet for Opening Sequence
  • Create titles that link to the genre (Subtitles and main Title. Work on the placement of our titles and continue work on Grid main font)
  1. We have already found an opening title we wish to create in After Effects. I am in the process of making said title in my free lessons at school. As for our other titles, we have been experimenting with different looks for our film:
  • Need to establish a narrative thread that hooks the audience and not a complete narrative (The marks will not count if the opening sequence is a short film)
  1. We ensure our narrative could be continued if the prospectus asked us to.
  • Introduce the main characters (Boy protagonist. Convey his mundane life through his actions, visual rather than spoken)
  1. Boy protagonist and does not speak in the opening of the film. He is isolated and alone but finds comfort in playing computer games and the general comforts of a typical home (Kettle, hot water, gaming chair)
  • Create enigma (mystery) in the opening by using a mixture of lighting, cinematography and sound.
  1. Lighting: Blue lighting
  2. Cinematography: Predominantly Tracking shots but when outside use handheld shots for an over-the-shoulder shot, settee shot and the introduction of the blue light (Boom with sound)
  3. Sound: The sound will have a calming feel, enticing the audience to begin to get comfortable with the narrative. Once the power cut happens the sound abruptly changes to unhinging and electric. this battles with the organic sounding strings/piano at the beginning making the spectator unnerved at what they are watching.
  • Within the titles I should also include a production company, Actors, Distribution company and the  Funding of the film.
  1. Universal
  2. Studio Canal
  3. Working Title (Owned by Universal so would be a good distributor to work in partnership with)
  4. MUST INCLUDE: Charlie Potter (Actor) , Lucie Potter (Cinematography), Tori Holness (Sound) and Shona Kinal (Editor)

No Electricity- Secondary Research

No Electricity- Secondary Research

I investigated using the internet to find opinions on the theory of a vast power cut. As I was watching YouTube I came across an interesting comedian called George Carlin. I will not put the video up because of the swearing involved but I will point out some interesting points he put across in his sketch.

Carlin did a sketch on life before and after the power goes off. Carlin stated there would be no food and water, or anywhere to keep it refrigerated for that matter. This surprised me as I had forgotten that clean running water uses electricity to be cleaned and we use electricity to keep our frozen food from going off. What separates us from animals would soon be gone. Security systems would break down and the prisons would open which could cause a major problem if the Grid was not able to turn back on. Eventually policemen would be projecting their own families and not others and everyone would suddenly become suspicious, anxious and want to fend for themselves.

I hope to include this into my film by having the main character  and uneasy as the lights go out. Because we have decided we only one on main character I proposed he would approach a window as if he is afraid of reality or the real world and before the title sequence comes up we cut away from the sight he is seeing, possibly riots or panicking people. This quick cutaway will link into our target audience because they expect surprise and quick scenes. By doing this the audience will become hinge onto the plot and become more intrigued into the teenagers situation.

Lighting Ideas

Lighting Ideas

I would like to use the lighting techniques as shown here to enhance the audiences reaction to the film as well as give it an enigmatic look. I find Film Riot a great way to learn more about film making and I feel learning about this will benefit our film. Grid will depend a lot on the lighting techniques used in the opening of the film. Because we want to create an eerie effect full of suspense we decided using a mini key light would give enough light onto the subject.

We are considering using a distinctive colour such as blue or white to have the protagonist stand out as a silhouette against the darkness in the hallway.

Experience With no Power-Primary resource

Experience Without Power-Primary Resource

During a Period three lesson the school experienced a power cut. All of us expected the power to return in a few moments, as this is the normal procedure, but after five minutes nothing had come back on. The dim emergency lighting had been engaged and we sat in the dark wondering what was going on.The teacher took us to the cafeteria where it was lighter, but it was very cold and eerie, with no one in the corridors or any lessons going on. The teacher decided to go on his phone to show us a website about a theater play to try and resume the lesson but suddenly realized he had no Wi-Fi. This happened on several occasions due to people forgetting that the power was gone. All of us tried having conversations, I ended up enjoying myself a lot more than I would have done. we laughed and joked about social things like Football, Lego and Drama. At the end of lesson we decided to leave but where told by members of staff not to go walking around (even though we had just stepped into the corridor) in case of safety measures. The dilemma was if the fire alarm went off nobody would know. Nobody from years 7-11 could contact their parents to go home and had to spend the rest of the day in the same room for emergency measure with no food or break. Sixth form where allowed to go home because they could sign out, but where told to do so discretely in case of upsetting the younger ones.
I arrived home only to find all the digital clocks going off and the internet down. My mum explained she had to manually cleanup all the dishes at work and not in the dishwasher, which mounted up work as she had people to serve and floors to wipe. When my brother finally returned home he talked about how boring his lesson was, and ended up drawing with his friends and playing games on an old phone (Pac-Man etc). There was no electricity at home either as the grid had shut down but we had gas and was able to still have dinner that night. The power eventually came back on and we ended up going back to normal (watching TV, going on the computer)

GRID Opening Ideas

Lucie and I met up to talk about further progression with the fonts. We decided that we wanted to create our title in After Effects in order to make our film look more professional and of a higher production value. It links into the genre and synopsis of the film through the electricity effect that spurts out from the main title. I researched into films in the same genre of Sci-fi and drama and concluded that these films would use bold special FX to have their title appear. It will submerge the audience in the narrative and lead them to believe they are watching a world that is falling to pieces.

Our target audience will be intrigued to continue the narrative because the font converts to their expectations of Sci-Fi films such as new technology and the motif of debated scientific theories such as 'What would the human race do with no electricity?'

Title Font Ideas and Plot ideas

Title Font Ideas and Plot Ideas

(Convention experimentation)
After Discussing initial ideas with the group we agreed on an idea that could revolve around Mrs Stones theme of 'mundane'. we decided to approach this as imagining the internet (a source of communication and way of life) to simply vanish with no trail with no one being to access it. Instead of life being mundane right now we decided 'what were to happen if the item we use the most was taken away from us? How would we cope with our mundane lifestyles? The theory could bring up issues as to how we value the internet, and are our lives really mundane with or without the internet? We wanted to also include the themes of isolation and we wanted to possibly include a family, however we are still deciding this because we do want to be able to get our message across to the audience without tarnishing the narrative development, we are thinking of using one boy one girl one woman.
